The Real ROI of Investing in Your Team’s Skills

September 4, 20262 min readUncategorized

Every company says its people are its greatest asset. Far fewer treat the budget line for developing those people that way. When forecasts tighten, training is often one of the first costs to go — treated as a nice-to-have rather than a lever that moves the business.

The data tells a different story.

Gallup’s research on employee development found that companies who invest strategically in growing their people’s skills report 11% greater profitability than those who don’t, and are twice as likely to retain their employees. That second number matters more than it might first appear. Replacing a skilled employee typically costs a substantial multiple of their salary once you account for recruiting, onboarding, and the productivity lost while a role sits empty or a new hire ramps up. Training isn’t competing with retention efforts — it is one.

That pattern holds up elsewhere. LinkedIn’s 2025 Workplace Learning Report found that 88% of organizations are actively concerned about retention, and when asked what actually works, learning and development came out as the number one strategy — ahead of pay increases and other perks. And according to HR.com’s 2025 research, 60% of organizations with high-quality L&D functions report measurably improved employee engagement.

Put together, a fairly consistent picture emerges:

  • Profitability — strategic development investment correlates with double-digit gains in profitability (Gallup).
  • Retention — employees who feel invested in are roughly twice as likely to stay (Gallup), and learning opportunities are the top retention lever organizations report using (LinkedIn 2025).
  • Engagement — strong L&D functions show up directly in engagement scores, not just satisfaction surveys (HR.com 2025).

None of this is about running more training for its own sake. Generic, one-size-fits-all sessions rarely move any of these numbers — the organizations seeing results are the ones treating development as a deliberate strategy: tied to real skill gaps, built around how their teams actually work, and revisited as the business changes rather than delivered once and forgotten.

That’s the gap we built Proskillz Academy to close — training designed around the skills a team or individual actually needs next, not a generic course library. Whether you’re building out a corporate training program, bringing in outside consulting to shape your L&D strategy, or investing in your own growth as a professional, the numbers back up what most leaders already sense intuitively: this isn’t overhead. It’s one of the highest-leverage investments a business can make.

If you’re weighing where to start, that’s exactly the conversation we have with teams every day — reach out and let’s figure out what makes sense for yours.
